Dr. Andrea Varju

Dr. Andrea Varju knew she would have a career in health care from childhood.  She completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Kinesiology in 1996 at Simon Fraser University.  During these years, she also worked in an optical lab, which became her introduction to focusing her career on taking care of people’s eyes (this is also where she met her future optician, Randi Tolhurst).  She continued her studies at the University of Waterloo, graduating with a Doctor of Optometry (Dean’s Honours’ List) degree in 2002.

Upon completion of her studies, Dr. Varju was eager to return to coastal BC (having grown up in North Vancouver) and was fortunate to have an opportunity to purchase an established optometry practice on Salt Spring Island.  Salt Spring always held a special place in her heart after spending many childhood summers on the island visiting her grandparents.

Dr. Varju loves island life.  She is an avid hiker and a quasi-gardener (i.e. when she can tear herself away from the trails), and is currently rediscovering her passion for travel and photography. She also plays flute in the Salt Spring Concert Band and Salt Spring Chamber Orchestra.  And on long winter evenings, her favourite place to be is next to the fire with a cat on her lap, and her knitting needles on the go.
